MATTEO RANDI MOSAICS

Q: What is a mosaic?

A:  A mosaic is an image, created by placing many small pieces of colored materials next to one another to create a design or figure.  The pieces are called tesserae, and the materials traditionally employed are stone and glass.

The earliest evidence of mosaics comes from Mesopotamia, where painted clay cones were inserted into exterior walls to create designs.  The Greeks later used pebbles to create figured and patterned floors for their buildings.

It was the Romans, and later the Byzantines, who perfected the technique of cutting stone and glass into tesserae.  These were then applied to floors and walls to lavishly enhance temples, homes, and baths.

Q: Can mosaics be placed outdoors?

A: Of course!  If you plan to enjoy your mosaic outdoors, such as on a tabletop, swimming pool border, or simply hung on an exterior wall, we will prepare it with that in mind.

Q: What are your prices based on?

A: Our prices are based on the material the mosaic is made of (smalti or stone), the complexity of the design, the size, and whether it is intended for indoor or outdoor use.

Q: How should I care for my mosaic?

A: Your mosaic is very durable, and requires very little maintenace.  If you should notice a little dust, simply brush it away with a clean, soft brush.
