Matteo Randi was born in Ravenna, Italy and began his formal training in mosaic art there at the age of 11. He continued his training at the Istituto d’Arte Gino Severini, then at the National School for the Conservation of Mosaics, both in Ravenna. Matteo’s work reflects the individual nature of each tessera, which he cuts by hand with the hammer and hardie, the same tools used by Roman craftsmen over 2000 years ago. This allows him to maximize the natural variations found in stone and glass, creating a distinct light and texture unique to each piece. In addition to creating original mosaic art, he composes mosaics on commission for homes and public spaces throughout the country. He also enjoys teaching classes and workshops for students of all skill levels, and is currently working with the Chicago Mosaic School on its new curriculum. He will once again be offering classes and workshops in his Washington, DC area studio in Spring 2013.
Matteo was mentioned on pages 30-31 of Terry Tempest Williams' 2008 novel, Finding Beauty in a Broken World. |
